"For an artist absorbed with themes of vision and the apparatus of sight, it seems natural that DeFeo would zero in on her swimming goggles as 'an object of observation,' photographing two pairs and making drawings of them in 1977. Her attention to surface and light is evident in the way she captured the translucency and reflectivity of the plastic lenses as well as the deep matte black of the teardrop-shaped padding."

In 1977 Jay DeFeo began swimming laps at a local pool in Marin County, California for general health and well-being, an activity she stuck with into the 1980s. She acquired swim goggles and was enchanted with the structure of them, saying years later that “It just happened to be a form that I liked.” A family of drawings, the "Water Goggles" series, was the result. She never did use the goggles for swimming.

Today we are looking back at “Jay DeFeo: Works on Paper,” an exhibition that opened in 1990 at the University Art Museum at the University of California, Berkeley (now known as the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive @bampfa).

Organized by art historian and curator Sidra Stich, DeFeo herself was involved in discussing works for the exhibit, which opened just a few months after DeFeo died. The exhibition highlighted DeFeo’s works on paper throughout her career: large scale, small scale, color, black and white. DeFeo particularly enjoyed working on paper, saying at one point, “Paper is so forgiving. You feel as though you can get a lot of ideas out, whereas canvas you always feel as though it’s got to be the one and only ultimate concept of all time. The exhibition traveled from Berkeley to The Menil Collection, Houston, TX; Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, CA; Fresno Art Museum, Fresno, CA, and Krannert Art Museum, Urbana-Champaign, IL. A catalogue edited by Sidra Stich, with contributions by Brigid Doherty, Michael McClure, and Sidra Stich accompanied the exhibition (89 pages, 57 full-page plates).

Remembering "Jay DeFeo: Selected Works, Past and Present” which was on view from April 18 - May 12, 1984 at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Forty years ago this month, Jay DeFeo was the recipient of the Adaline Kent Award. This award, funded by the artist Adaline Kent after her death in 1957, was given annually by the San Francisco Art Institute to California artists of exceptional talent. The prize included an exhibition, “Jay DeFeo: Selected Works, Past and Present” about which one art critic wrote:

"DeFeo is an artist with the spirit of a fighter and a poet. This survey exhibition reveals the perseverance with which she has worked through the ebbs and flows of her development, as well as the dedication with which she has kept her inner purposes alive. DeFeo’s work offers metaphoric maps of both her analytic processes and her spontaneous psychic ones. Perhaps the most significant aspects of this art are its ability to hold opposing forces in harmony and its humanistic refusal to succumb to a doctrine of dogmatism."

Jay DeFeo is featured in "Seven Famous Postwar American Artists from the Bay Area" by Bridget Quinn for the @nobhillgazette.

"Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) is best known for a single, monumental — some might say monomaniacal — artwork, 'The Rose' (1958–66). Once described by DeFeo as 'a marriage between painting and sculpture,' 'The Rose' is nearly 11 feet high and a foot thick; it weighs over a ton. After some eight years of obsessive reworking, DeFeo only stopped (mostly) when she was evicted from her Fillmore apartment in 1965. Bruce Conner, who filmed the eviction, complete with sawing open a wall to extract 'The Rose,' said there needed to be an 'uncontrolled event to make it stop.' And by it, he meant DeFeo."

"According to [Wally] Hedrick, he and DeFeo shared an intense, romantic fascination with mountain climbing and especially with the 1953 Mt. Everest expedition of Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climber to reach the summit and return. Hillary's heroic exploits (along with, perhaps, her memories of Colorado) no doubt stimulated DeFeo's 1955-56 'mountain' series ('The Rose' is painted over a failed one) and continued to inspire her."

On Arbor Day, we are happy to announce the upcoming exhibition “Jay DeFeo: Trees,” opening at the @lagunaartmuseum on September 22, 2024. The exhibit will focus on an intriguing series of 1950s works on the subject along with photographs from the 1970s demonstrating DeFeo’s lifetime interest in trees.

Curated by Laguna Art Museum Curatorial Fellow Rochelle Steiner, the exhibition and catalogue will be part of Laguna Art Museum’s annual Art + Nature initiative.
